About

Why is the header image a staircase? It represents hoarding — what happens when the impulse to buy and hold onto things spirals out of control. Many begin hoarding due to trauma of one kind or another, most often the loss of a parent, spouse or child. We can either keep trudging along on our downward spiral, or reverse the process and climb up out of the darkness and clutter.

This photo was taken inside a lighthouse. It helps me to remember that I only need to take one step at a time to eventually reach a place where light, space, and openness are all around me. At the top of the lighthouse we see unlimited vistas in all directions. Nothing obstructs our vision of what lies ahead of us.

Recovering from hoarding isn’t simply about cleaning our homes. It’s about letting go of the hurt inside so we can get out of the rut we’re in and move forward. I know the view from the top will be glorious. Take the journey one step at a time.

  1. This is a great idea for a blog and you’ve executed it well. You come across as a loving and resourceful person who cares about your family and wants to make things better. I hope to see you post more — anything! As the adult daughter of a hoarder, I really appreciate your insight into your own actions: a rare and valuable thing to share with the world; it gives people like me hope!
